THE SCHOOL OF ART.
TO THK EDITOR OF THE PBBSS. Sm,—For a considerable period I have taken a keen interest in art matters in Chrietchurch, and have regularly attended the exhibitions of students' werk at the School of Art. Year after year have I wondered at the poor display in landscape painting, bat this year the moat casual observer could see that ia this eection there was not only no apparent progress, but there was distinct retrogression.
This is to be deplored, for without doubt Ne«r Zealand will produce great landscape painters—Nature intended that when she gave us as an inheritance the majestic scenery of our lakes and sounds. In "still life" and other branches our School of Art holds a high place in the colonies, but the landscape and seascape work is unworthy of an ancient '* dame's school." Whose fault this ia concerns mc not, but if I can draw the attention of the powers that be to this matter to some purpose my objeco will have been gained.— Yours, &c, Observer.
