LAWN TENNIS.
A match was played between the Ashburton and Southbridge Clubs on Saturday, at Rakaia, Mr C. Hardy kindly placing his asphalt court at tbe disposal of the Clubs; thus enabling them to meet half way. In spite of the rain each party was on the ground by 3 p.m., and play commenced at about 3.50. Two doubles and four singles were played, resulting as follows :—- Siugles—Clowes (A.) beat Gales (S.), 9—4. Whitehouse (S.) beat Pateraou (A.), 9—7. Bia«k (A.) beat Withers (S.), 9—7. Jackson (A.) beat Willis (S-), 6—L. Doubles—Black and Jackson (A.) beat Withers and Willis (S,), 9—6.. Whitehouse and Gates (S.) beat Clowes and Paterson (A.), 6—3. Ashburton thns won 43 games against Southbridge's 33. Daring play the weather held up, but fading light compelled two of the matches, to be shortened. Mr Hardy, with his customary kindness, has placed his capital court at the disposal of the two Clubs for a return match. The many visitors aod friends of _ the players who were present were hospitably entertained by Mrs Hardy at afternoon tea, and a hearty vote of thanks and three cheers for Mrs and Mr Hardy, terminated an enjoyable afternoon.
