THE MOMOHAKI PURCHASE.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WANGANUI, January 28. District Judge Kettle commenced his first sitting under the commission issued by the Governor at Waitotara on Friday, iv the presence of a large number of Natives. Chas. Wallace, a Native interpreter, of Otaki, gave evidence as to being present -when a cheque for £5400 (the subject of inquiry) was handed to Williams, and from what took place witness understood that Williams was to cash the cheque at Patea and bring the money to the Natives. Next day Wiremu Kaiuka was examined at length, and corroborated the statement of the previous witness. Mr Churton, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Patea, gave evidence as to cashing the cheque presented by Williams on December 29th, 1880, and stated that so far as he knew witness was cashing the cheque for the Natives. The enquiry was continued yesterday, when Major Brown, Mr*, Fisher, and other witnesses were examined.
