FIRES.

About half-past twelve on Saturday aiternoon a fire broke out in the stable, situated in Harper street, Sydenham, of Mr fcierritt, carrier. The Liohfield street chemical engine was called out, and succeeded in extinguishing the Barnes after half of the stable had been burnt. A horse which was in the building at the time was badly burnt about the back, mane, and shoulders, in addition to having one ear almost singed completely off. Tne animal was afterwards shot. There was no insurance on the building. The fire is said to have been caused by a boy smoking among the straw in the stable. (press association telegrams.) NELSOSf, January 27. The evidence of Mrs Doe, at the inquest yesterday, seems to hayo been given under mistaken identity. A young man named Williams, similar in appearance to Baker, says chat it was he who spoke to Mrs Doe on the morning of the fire at the school. WANGANUI, January 27. A fire in Victoria Avenue, at 3 o'clock this morning, wrecked five shops, occupied by Fenton (hatter), Hannah (bootmaker), Gatenby (chemist), Tustin (painter), Anderson (furniture dealer). The fire broke out in Fenton's shop, and travelled up the staircase, communicating with marvellous rapidity with the upstair portion and the adjoining buildings. The Fire Brigade worked well, and all danger was averted within half-an-honr of the alarm. A fortunate circumstance was that there was no wind, or the whole block must have been consumed. With the exception of Fenton's premises, which were gutted, the. other damage is mostly through the charring of the upstairs portion and the deluge of water poured on the flames. The insurances were -.—John Anderson's etock, in the New Zealand office, £350 ; Alliance, £250 ; Phoenix, £300; in the Northern, £100. The stock is valued at nearly £600, and the total damage is estimated at £1500. The New Zealand Company have £150 reinsured in the South British. Hannah and Co. has £2000 in the Straits Settlement Company and£6oo in the Now Zealand Company. Gitenby, £1090 in the Norwich Union. Tnstin, on stock, £250 in the New Zealand and £150 in the Phoenix, and on the building, £500 in the Standard and £100 in the Manchester. Fentou has £100 in the Manchester and £150 in the Phcenix on stock, fixtures and tools. The block of buildings beloDga to Taylor's estate. GREYMOOTH, January 27. By a fire at Totara Flat this morning Cohen's store and dwelling was burned to the ground. The insurances Were £750 in the Economical and £150 in the Manchester Oifices.
