ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A tea and public induction meeting to welcome the Rev. W. Barnett to the pastorate of the Sydenham Baptist Church was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. The following ladies assisted at the tables—Mesdames Wm. Smith, Simpsou, Dymond, Bird, Gahagan, Webb, and Misses Palmer and Simmons. The Rev. C. Dallaston, of Wellington, presided at the ■ public meeting, the other speakers being Rev. W. Barnett, Messrs Marriner, Staples, Fraser- and North. The choir was under the leadership of Mr Ferry, and Miss Bonnington presided at the organ. A successful sale of.work was opened yesterday afternoon in the Baptist Taoernacle schoolroom by Rev. C. Dallaston, and the various stallkeepers did a good business, and the evening was devoted to a social. Tbe Committee of Management were Mesdames Olney, Efford, Hewitt, Glanville, Sailer, Cooper, and Misses Pratt and Breem. The sale will be continued to day, and during the evening selections from the popular cantata •* Pic-nic " wi!l be given by the Church choir, under the leadership of MrH. Corrick. At the meeting of the St. MichaeP's Temperance Society held last dnight Mr Beardsley showed some excellent views including "Ten Nights in a Bar room" and " How Uncle Pompey jined the Pledge." Mr Cauldrom gave the readings.
