NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

The Orchestral concert, which takes place to-night in the Tuam street Hall, promises j to be a great success in the matter of j attendance, a very large number of seats j having been booked. The programme of instrumental music comprises several items included in the last one, notably the incidental music to " Henry VIIL" Beethoven's symphony No. 2, in D, and Mozart's overture. Mr Wallace will play Beethoven's Romance in F No. 2, with orches.ral accompaniment. Miss Maude Ross, of Wellington, who makes her debut here to-night, has chosen Schubert's song, "The Trout/and A. Goring Thomas' "A Summer Night." The other vocal soloist is the Rev. A. Mitchell, who sings "Honour and Arms" and " When Night is Darkest." His Excellency the Governor and Lady Glasgow will be present on the occasion. To-day at Diamond Harbour those who came out in the ship Brothers Pride will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their arrival. Since that time a considerable addition in the way of families bas taken place to the original number, aud, no doubt, they will muster largely to-day. The place chosen for the picnic is Diamond Harbour, and the pleasure seekers will proceed thither by the steamer John Anderson, which will leave Lyttelton on arrival of the 10.30 a.m. train from Christchurch. To-morrow eveniug at the Oddfellows' Hall the friends of Mr W. W. Collins, one of the newly elected members for Christchurch, will hold a social to commemorate his return and also to congratulate Mr Collins. The installation of Bro. E. R. Deacon as W.M. of the Conyers Lodge, 1916, E.C., and the investiture of: hia officers, will take place at the Sydenham Masonic Hall tomorrow at 7.30 p.m., whan a large gathering of brethren ia anticipated. The volley firing in connection with the College Rifles will take place to-day. Drags have been arranged to leave Cathedral square at 2.45, 4. 4.30 and 5 p.m. Undress uniform will be worn. The Kaiapoi borough school entertainment, at which several novelties will be introduced, takes place this evening in aid of the prize funds. The attention of boating men who intend visiting the Akaroa regatta is drawn to the notification elsewhere that the s.s. Jane Douglas will leave for Akaroa at 10 a m. on Sunday next. Boating men who wish to get quite over the trip before the races commence will do well to note the opportunity offered by the Jane Douglas sailiug the day before the regatta. K.C. boathouse. A meeting of ratepayers in the Avon Road Board-istrict is convened to be held this eveniug at the Papanui Sunday school, re drainage rate. The statutory meeting of the Heathcote Road Board will be held in the OpAWschoolroom to-morrow at 8 p.m., when the balance sheet, as audited aud certified to, will be presented. The New Brighton excursion will leave the Square thia evening at 7.15. . Should the weather prove favourable, there will no doubt be a large attendance of visitors. In response to an invitation from the Committee of the St. Albans school, the Countess of Glasgow has kindly consented to present the prizes on Friday, 22nd, at 3 p.m. The school and grounds will be thrown open to parents and visitors at 2 o'clock. A cordial invitation has been issued by the Committee to those who would like to attend. As will be seen by a notification elsewhere, Labour Day Demonstration will be held at the Riccarton Racecourse on Monday next. The programme includes, among other items, a tug of -war, eight men aside, from any one particular trade or calling, for prizes value £26; a- baby show, two classes, under six months aud under twelve months, for prizas value £7 10s, and a cabmen's trot, for prizes value £4. The Committee anticipate that the value of the latter prize will be augmented by additional donations. As will be seen by a notification elsewhere, an out-door fete in connection with St. Matthew's, St. Albans, will be held to-day. An entertainment is announced to take place to-morrow evening in connection with the band's art union, to which art union tickets will admit. The second of the series, of local wool sales under the auspices of the Woolbrokers' Association, will commence tomorrow in the hall of the Chamber of Commerce. . . . Elsewhere will be found the programme of a popular concert to be given on the evening of the Labour Demonstration Day at the Tuam street Theatre. Amongst those taking part in the programme are Misses Buchanan and Martin, Mrs Edgar, Messrs Woodhouse, Edgar, Merton, aud Buckeridge. The Seventy-five Yards Christmas Handicap of the East Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club will be held at their baths on Thursday evening, December 21st, at 5.30 o'clock. Entries close with the Hon. Secretary on December 19th. .On Boxing Day the annual Druids' Gala will be held in Mr Harrison's paddock,. Papanui road. .. Every preparation .is. being made to ensure the success ot the gathering, and. plenty, of amusement will be provided, for both old and young;- In connection with the fete an art union will be held, the prizes for which are of a substantial and valuable character. The prizes are now on view in a shop next the Central Hotel and are attracting considerable public attention.
