PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
JtUC Ul'UlUttl V IUUUVUiy mx»vv... 6 v.. VIIO Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held at bhe City Council Chambers at noon yesterday. There were present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Key. A. Chodowski, and Messrs M. Murphy, J. C. Prudhoe, and A. W. Smith, assistant Secretary and Inspector. The Inspkctok reported that during last month he had visited the suburbs and the markets at Addington and Chrisbchurch. The police had laid an infoimabion againsb a man whom he had reporbed for driving a lame horse. Ho had visited Wellington, and saw the Hons. W. P. Reeves and J. McKenzie, who promised to place a subsidy for the Society upon the estimates nexb session. He had inquired into twelve cases of cruelty, and iv several gave cautions. The Inspector stated that the information against the man for driving a lame horse had been dismissed.
A letter was read from the Linwood Borough Council, stating that they could not carry out tho construction of a wateriug place near the Stanmore bridge on account of bhe cost.
It was resolved that the Inspector visit the Addington Saleyards every Wednesday, especially in the afternoon. On the motion of Mr Prudhoe, seconded by Mr Murphy, the offer of the Ladies Committee to meet monthly with the General Committee was accepted.
The annual meeting of the Society waß fixed for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31st, in the City Conned Chambers. The drawing up of the annual report and the arrangements of the meeting was left in the hands of the Hon. Sec. The Committee then adjourned.
