SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Selwyn County Council met at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. Present—Messrs D. Mα* MiLUn (Chairman), W. Dunlop, W. Boag, T. York, T. H. Anson, R. Westenra, fl, W. Poryman, and J. Rennie. The Chairman stated that at the last meeting a resolution waa passed to strike a rate in the Hals well riding. After conferring with the Council c solicitor he thought it better to defer taking any action until he had again laid the matter before the members. Hβ had received a letter from the Ashburton County Council rolativt to the state of the cuttings on the south approach to the Rakaia Gorge bridge, and intimating that the repairs would be put in hand. The Acclimatisation Society had again written, asking the Council to endeavour to prevent the destruction of trout in the water races. The reports on tiu water races and several letters concerning water supply, as well as some referring to plantation, matters, had to be considered. In respect of the Halswell rate, tin Chairman explained that the opinion ol the County Solicitor was that the rate must be struck over the whole district and collected therefrom. '■''... After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Dunlop, seconded by Mr York, that the Council should give notice of its intention, at its meeting on the 10th of February, to make and levy a special rate for the clearing and maintaining clear the River Halawell. ~ c It was decided, in reply to he et e> from the Ashburton County Co : to write that this Council did not oneider that part of the road referred to elonged to the approaches. , - Concerning the letter from the Acclimatisation Society, The Chaibman pointed out that the Council could not help fish dying when water waa turned off. While doing repairs and inspecting the tunnel it was necessary that the water should be turned otf. The Council would in other reepecta do its best to protect the trout. The Council dealt with the reports oa the water rases, received and disposed of * number of letters, aad then adjourned.
