THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
Mr E. W. Humphreys has favored us with the following letter which he received from the Secretary of the War Offlce, in reply to a communication Addressed to the Hon. Mr Stanhope with reference to a cable message received here to the effect that for the future frozen, meat would be excluded from the army contracts:— " War Office, «* 17th November, 1890. "My Dear Sir,—l am desired by Mr Stanhope to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th September, and to thank you for writing to him on a subject which <ih-of undoubted importance both to the Colony and to the Mother Country. " Of course as regards the use of frozen meat by the army, Mr Stanhope has had to be entirely guided by the opinion of his military advisers. "Mr Stanhope has quite recently had the pleasure of receiving an important deputation on this subject, and then explained that for a brief period, of six months ih 1889 we admitted frozen beef into our contracts, and endeavored to make it acceptable by allowing 10 per cent, extra meat when it was issued.
** Complaints were, however, so numerous, persistent, and well-founded, that we were obliged at some stations to exclude it before the six mouths contracts were out, and to entirely remove it from the next contracts.
"These objections do not attach to frozen mutton nor to fco-called * Refrigerated ' beef both of which we purchase, and propose to continue to purchase.for the use of troops. "I am, "My dear Sir, "Your* truly. *'<*. Fijebtwooo WrxaoK. M B. W. Humphreys, Esq."
