News has been received" that the Japanese Government have subsidised a steam service between Japan and Australia, and the first vessel oi the new line will leave Yokohama for an Australian port on the sth January. HARVEST PKOSPEOTS. Satisfactory accounts are being received of the harvest prospects in the Albury district, and it is expected tbat the wheat will average twelve bushels to the acre. Oats and other crops will be universally prolific. SERIOUS GRASS FIRE. Ten thousand acres of grass have been burnt near Jerilderie, about 400 miles inland. Incendiarism is suspected. Received December 31st, 1 a.m. AN ABSCONDING BANK MANAGER. Sydney, December 30. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the manager of the Padiiugton branch (Sydney suburban) of the -English and Scottish Chartered Bank, it is believed he sailed by the last San Francisco steamer. The defalcations are expected to reach several thousands. AN UNFORTUNATE VESSEL, Melbourne, December 30. The ship Keiton-has arrived fom Kio' Janeiro with* the , captain/ nwife, and five seamen suffering from smallpox. The vessel was caught by a squall and went ashore while proceeding to the quarantine station, but is in no -danger.
