SOCIAL AND GENERAL
Apart from .the turmoil of politics the gaiety.of the Canterbury carnival week is lhnost the only subject we have to write about this month. Seldom if ever has Christchnrch been so full of visitors as it wag during the week of t_e show and races, and Beldam if ever has the city given itself up Bo thoroughly to pleasure taking. Politics were forgotten for the time being, despite the fact that the colony was on the eve of - general election. There were not quite _o many entries as usual in some of the classes at the Metropolitan Show, hut the -Uality was-first class, and the gathering "was on the whole a great success. The zaoes also were well attended, despite the fact that the weather was bad on the Cup Day. The racing throughout was of a good and interesting character, but it was not aaE-ed hy any sensational episode, such as has characterised some previous Metropolitan Meetings. The Cup was won by Mr J. Brett*s Wolverine, who started third favorite on the totalisator, and the Derby by Mr G. G. Stead's Medallion. The MidlandKailway Co. have hadano—ler sale of a portion of their lands, the total amount realised at the auction i being ,£53,000. Details of the sale will be found In another column.
The strike is now completely at an end, both in Australia and -Tew Zealand. It _a_ t-rminatedu-fortunately in a large number of Unionist laborers finding themselves without means of employment, their places having been filled by the **free laborers." The employers naturally are bound to stand by the men who came to their assistance in a time of difficulty. At the same time there ia a desire that anything like a bitter feeling -hall become a thing of the past as speedily as possible, and the {employers, we believe, will in every case where they can do so without injustice to competent free __>or_rß, give employment to their old hands again. The obituary list of the past month includes the names of two cu_-e_tah___ed medical practitioners—Dr. J. S. Tubhbtj_i_ who has been connected with Christcburah almost from its foundation; and Dr-Mclrtt-e, of Timaru. Both were men of great skill in their prof esaian, aad their loss will be widelyjcegretted.
