The Chairman brought before the Board the question of the hoar of meeting, which was inconvenient for country members al present. Mr H. Allwbight gave notice—" Thai the hour of meeting be altered from 2 p.m. to 2.80 p.m." ▲ letter waa read from the Selwyn County Council forwarding copies of re* solutions passed by the Conference of dele* gates from County Councils and Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, held on the 24th and 25th oi April last. The letter was received. The Female Refuge Committee reported —" Your Committee regrets that the able assistance in the working of this institution, rendered for so many years by a Committee of ladies, has been withdrawn. As the Matron is now in sole charge, your Committee felt it imperative that the Refuge should, be connected with the Telephone Exchange, and It took action accordingly." Mi* Prudhoe, in moving the adoption of the report, regretted that the Ladies Committee had sent iv their resignation. The Chairman endorsed Mr Prudhoe'e remarks with reference to the Ladies Committee, as he fully recognised the valuable services they had rouuciod. The report was adopted. Mr Pkddhoe moved—" That the lettoi from the Ladies Committe be accepted with regret, and the thanks of the Board be tendered to them for past services." Mr Crooks seconded the motion. Mr Wood asked if it waa intended te ask other ladies to act as visitors to the Refuge. Mr All wright said that as the Refuge was now in full charge of the Matron it was not necessary to have a Ladies Com* mittee. He hoped it would be worked, aft least for a time, without such a Commit tee. The motion was agreed to. 'ihe Lyttelton Orphanage Committee re ported :—" There are 48 children no* in the institution—thirty boys and eighteen girls—whose health and general condition are satisfactory. The buys have recently been supplied with good warm overcoats. The reports of the Lady Visitor* and the Medical Officer are appended, and a letter from the ladles on the subject of visiting the Orphanage girl* after being placed out at service, will be found on the table." " Being the visitors for the mouth of April, we are glad to be able to report satisfactorily oi the state of things generally. A few of the children were suffering from the prevailing epidemic, but evidently in a mild form, and were being well cared for." Signed bj Mrs Lingakd and Mrs Izabd.—"l beg to report upon the Lyttelton Or* phanage for the past quarter. Dr. Gann* who acted for mc during March and a large part of April, has noted in his visit* ing book and has also reported to me.most favorably of the management and the food supply at the Orphanage. I have again goue into the diet scale, but cannot see any reason for altering it. There has been rather more sickness than usual recently owing to the prevailing epidemic of influenza having invaded the institution. Apart from that the children are well, and appear happy and contented."—(Signed) T. O. Gtjthrik, M.D. Mr Crooks moved the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Mr Mo* Millan and agreed to. A discussion took place on the question of further reducing the staff at the Orphanage in consequence of the com* paratively small number of children in the institution. No action was taken in the matter. A letter was read from the Lady Visitor* to the Orphanage, thanking the Board for adopting their suggestions aa to visiting the girls placed out on service, and stating that they would be ready to begin the visiting as soon f> the necessary forms for reports were provided. A further letter was received, stating that Mrs Clark had resigned from the Lady Visitors' Committee, and that Mrs Webb had been appointed ia her stead. ..-. The letters were received. Ihe Treasurer ha 3 the honor to report that all the contributions fop the past year from the local authorities, wltU one exception—that of a balance of £100, due from the Waipara Road Board—had come to hand, a cheque from the Ash burton County Council having arrived that morn* , ing. The report waa adopted. . .-■•» The report on out-door relief was sub; mitted aa under:—"The Charitable Aid Committee afforded assistance in 4Q4 separate cases within the district durinj the inontli of March, and 474 in AprilAt least twenty of these are new cases, It has been reported to your .Committee that a recipient in the country,• who sought by legal process to obtain, some help from a relation of the family, was unsuccessful in the attempt. luformattop subsequently obtained shows that the defendant assigned his property to another person in order to evade responsibility for the maintenance of plaintiff*s children. The reports from the local visitors, of the children boarded out, are in 'general highly satisfactory." The report was adopted. The AshburtonHome Committee recommended the reappolntnient of Dr. Trevoi as Medical Officer. The Home la now quite full, the number of inmate* being returned last week at sixty. > <!-; The report was adopted and the Board then adjourned.
