NATIVE LAND QUESTION.
(FSSSS .ASSOCIATION TKLEORAiL) ATJCKLAND, April I_. Dr. Newman addressed a well-attended meeting in the Chamber of Commerce today, on the best means of opening up unoccupied lands in the North Island. He said that he had been through the country from Wellington to Auckland, and was astonished at the. magnificent land in possession of the Maoris and unoccupied. He proposed the Government should at. once buy these • lands, throw them open for settlement, whereupon the exports of the country would be doubled without borrowing being necessary. There were little or no comment on the address. The meeting passed a vote of thanks to Dr Newman,
