John Rogers Herbert, R.A., was horn At Maldon, Essex, in 13J.fr, and was sent to |I<ondon In 1838, where h$ became a o£ tho Boyal Academy. He deI oted his attention at an early age to portrait, painting, and received sittings from many remarkable persons, including •her Majesty the Queen, then Princess Victoria. Elected an A.X.A. in IStl. ha next year exhibited ** The First Introdaetion of Christianity into Britain," which initiated the series of pictures upon religious subjects which made him famous. In 1848 he was elected B.A. His fresco "Illustration of Juscice on the Bafth and I its development of Law and Judgment," for the Peers , Robing Boom at West- ! minster, was completed in 1884. His , M Moses descending from the Mount with the Tabled of the Law" Is in the principal (Committee Room of the House of Lords. His picture "The Judgment of Daniel," painted for the House of Lords, was ex- ! hibited in 1831. He was elected in 1869 a • foreign corresponding member oX the French Academic dcs Beaux- Arts.
