Sutherland, M.P., Director, stated the Bank did not expect to experience any difficulty arising out of advances on land in Melbourne. CROFTERS' EMIGRATION. • Two hundred and eighty crofters have been despatched to Canada by the Assisted Emigration Society. THE QUEEN. Her Majesty the Queen is much improved ia health by her recent trip to Biarritz. Before leaving the latter place her Majesty made a donation of three thousand francs to the poor of Biarritz. LIBEL. The Pall Mall Gazette has been cast in £1500 damages in a libel action. PRAIRIE FIRES, New York, April 5. NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. London, April 6. At the nautical enquiry into the circumstances connected with the ship Sir Walter Raleigh going ashore on the French coast, the Board found that the master of the vessel was to blame for the accident, and suspended his certificate for nine months. SIR H. ROBINSON. After the expiration of the Easter holidays Sir Hercules Robinson will return to the Cape. SIR DILLON BELL Sir Francis Dillon Bell, New Zealand's Agent-General, has gone to Paris, where he will remain until after the opening of the Exhibition. VACCINATION. Mr C. T. Twelve of the couuties and two of the cities of Ontario have decided in favor of the adoption of the Temperance Act. THE MELBOURNE BOOM At the meeting of the Bank of Australasia, on Friday, Mr T. Sutherland, one of the Directors, explained tbat advances made by the Institution were prudent, and made without reference to the enhanced value to which land went during the recent boom. TRADE RETURNS. The statistics of the Board of Trade show that the value of imports and exports for the last quarter is thirteen and a half millions in excess of the corresponding period last year. OBITUARY. London, April 6. The Duchess of Cambridge is dead. [H.R.H. Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa' Duchess of Cambridge, was the widow of the first Duke of Cambridge, and mother of the present Duke. She was a daughter of H.S.H. Frederick, Landgrave of Hessel Cassel, and was upwards of 91 years of age, being born on July 25th, 1797.
