.Election Hotaces. ASHLEY ;EIECITION. Sf R Bf. Dxx ° N WILL HAVE MUCH PLEASURE MEETING THE ELECTORS ' OF THE ASHLEY DISTRICT At the followinz places and dates :— WEDNESDAY, 25th JULY, ViewHUl, 1784 TO THE ELECTORS ' OF THE ASHLEY DISTRICT. f\ ENTLEMEN—Mr Verroll has gone to some VJT trouble to lay before you tho speeches made at tho last Oxford meeting, by publishing those made by Mr Ollivier ana himself, and a very short one by myself. It was a very coli evening, ai.d I was at tho disadvantage of speaking la?t, and did little more than announce my candidature. As I beliove the re]K>rters will be too busy to attend auy political meotiDg3 in the district, I shall not have a chance of laying my views fully before you through their medium. My endeavors will be in the direction of simplifying and developing a more paternal form ot government by economy and ctficienoy rather than that by a system of cheeseparing. But the necessities ot tho position. I think, require a deal of reorganisation, taking into consideration the welfare of all classes. Instead of bringing foith the antagonistic feelings of the people, it should bo made to bear evenly and draw together all classes, having duo regard for tho H'99 fortunate. It is within the power of the Government to do a great deal towards encouraging the industry of the country. I think it is a mistake to make the expense of living greater by imposts on tae ordinary domesticreqnirements, as that would cheek development. Tnere are certain industries which may bo benetii.iaily fostered till they have attained a proper amount of stability. The finance of the country is precipitated into snch a position, that it has forced upon \is this disagreeable word " Retrenchment. It is like a man having to retrace his way in a dark and muddy lane, when it has becomo perilous to proceed further; tlitrefore I am totally averse to further borrowing. I have no confidence in Mr Verrall's flimsy paper scheme—it will not produce tho cf.pi'&l tnatis necessary to develop those industries, and establish the confidence which is ab=iolut»ly necessary. You will see that I am desirous of utilising the abundant labor at present in tho country, rivlher than the introduction of Chinese. When our industries have been established and developed, our own race 3 (through the many advantages the country offers) will flow towards us. The goodness of our port and the excellence of our steam communication have been only partially realiecd. I was flattered by it bc.ngSiiid of mc at the Oxford nomination that "1 had provided all the brains for the old Provincial Council." That was flatter-/. I know that if you send mo to Wellington I shall have my full share cf quiet influence. My owti constituency shall have my especial supervision. I hope to b ■ always at hand to consider any question that you wish to have attended to. I have been sufficiently long before you in my public and i riviite capacity for you to k.-iow that I say what. I mean, and I trust my friendship with the constituents will be o> a lastirg character. > Your obedient servant, ; MARMADUKE DIXQN. 1921 ■ ' . ashley election. declaratio"n~of polling.
