THE WHITNEY CARTRIDGES.
[Bt Txlxqbaph.] < [*EOM OUB COBBWSPONDKKT] WELLINGTON, January 26. Reports received by the Department on the triale of the Whitney cartridges are very contradictory. The cost of the Kvnock (English) cartridge is eight shillings per hundred, and the Whitney twelve ■hillings. The Government, however, allow ten per cent, discount on Waitney and buy the cases, whioh ate of copper, at four shillings a hundred, thus making them ten per cent, cheaper than Kynock’s. Captain Whitney is said fee have sunk a large amount of money in the aff air and is determined to succeed. He is now about to start for England, with a view of arranging for cheaper material, also be will try to arrange for a Company to start a powder mill in New Zealand. The trial of Auckland ammunition as against Kynock’s imported article, authorised by the Government, took piece today at the Mount Eden range. The arrangements were under the supervision of Colonel Bailey. There was a large attendance of officers cn the Auoklaud staff to witness the trial. The ranges were 600 and 200 yards, and seven fired, amongst the marksmen being Colonel Bailey, Colonel Shepherd, and Captain White. At 500 yards whitnoy and Co.’s ammunition was ahead by 14 points, and at the 200 yards range, with only a third of the men testing the new cartridges, the Auckland ammunition had five pointi ia its favor.
