RAKAIA.
The ordinary monthly meeting ot this Board was held on December 6th. Present—Messrs Bioh. ' westenra (Chairman), A. D. Afcllraith, and A, Colville. The Surveyor's report was read and con* sidered. The following correspondence was readt —From the Selwyn County Council, informing the Board that the Council would accept the payment ot the contribution required from the Bakaia Boad district for hospitals and charitable aid on the oonditions stated in the Board's letter dated November sth last. It was decided that a cheque for the amount claimed, viz., £213 12s 6d, be forwarded to the Council. From tbe earns, advising that the Conncil have decided to renew the grant voted last year for the suppression of the small birds nuisance. The Clerk waa instructed to make an application to the Council for the sum of £10 under the terms of this letter. From tbe Cemmissioner ot Crown Lands, informing the Board that the sum of £341 3s Ad arising from deferred ' payment lands leased in the district is 1 payable to the. Board on a certificate being given that the Waste Lands Board approves !of the plan of the roads oh whioh ithe money is proposed to be expended. It was shown that the deferred payment land referred to is already provided with sufficient road aocommodaticn to meet present requiiemenis, but that it is I placed under a great disadvantage for want of . water. The question was discussed as to whetber ! the money could be obtained for the purpose of 1 furnishing tbe laud with water-races, as the most I advantageous manner in which it could be exI pended for the benefit of the selectors, but as it j appears by the Land Act that it must be expended ; on toads giving access to the blocks from which it < is derived, it was decided to have the necessary - plans and estimates prepared for that purpose. ~ Front-Mr E. Derritt, complaining of ike dangerous -'■ stater of a culvert on Derritt's road, and suggesting some alteration in the drainage by which the culvert could be dispensed with. Referred to the Surveyor, with authority to aot upon Mr ' Dertitt's suggestion if found practicable. From ■•: the Dunsandel and Hororata oattle rangers, re* i signing their appointments. Accepted, It was ' decided that tbe necessary steps be taken to have , tbe question of tbe Bllesmere Road Board's Ha* j bility to contribute towards the maintenance of the i road running t long the boundary from Selwyn. to 1 Dnosandel settled under the provisions of the I Fublio Works Act, 1882. Tho tender of Mr A. Porter, lor re-forming and shingling Everett's road, being tbe lowest received, was accepted. It was decided to cancel Mr Gemmell's contract for supplying shingle on Dunsandel road, owing to the manner in which the work has been delayed, and to call freßh tenders for the work after harvest. The Caretaker of the Hororata Water-races attended, with his report, which was read and considered. Messrs Buchanan and Held interviewed tbe Board re water supply for sections 28853, 28852 and 30070. It wasdnotded to allow this question, also applications from Messrs J. T. Wright and J. Gemmell, to stand over until the next meeting. After passing accounts amounting to £65315s lid, tbe Board adjourned.
