WELLINGTON, September 23. The Gazette notifies the Queen's exequatur empowering Mr F. E. Wright to act as Consul fox Sweden and Norway at Christchurch. Captain W. St. G. Douglas, of the Aahburton Bines, is promoted to be Major. Captain W. G. Moore, of the Geraldine Bifles, to be Major. Major J. A. Young, unattached, to be Quartermaster.

The Gazette published to-night contains a scale of fares, rates, and cbargee on the New Zealand Btilways, to come into force on October 4th.

An Older in Council declares that in all parts of the colony salmon, young salmon, salmon fry, trout, young trout, and trout fry, together with all other ealmonidee, and also all white flab, tench, and perch, which have been introduced into the colony, shall be and are hereby protected, subject, however, to operation of such open aaaums for fishing, and for taking such fieh, as tiie Governor may from time to time declare by regulations to be made under the Salmon and Trout Act, 1867.

Regulations for trout fishing, under Salmon and Trout Act, in North Canterbury, Nelson, South Canterbury, Geraldine, Waitaki, Otago, Southland districts, are published to-night. The Commission to enqoire into the purchase of certain land near Auckland for defence purposes, is gazetted to-night. The report is to be sent in not later than 30th November.

Various gaolers in the colony are appointed probation officers under the First Offenders' Probation Act, ISB6. In districts where there is no gaoler the eenior officer or member of poLce lorce is to ace
