SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BFARD.

This Board held its ordinary meeting on Thursday. Present—Messrs C. N. Mackie (chairman), C. S. Coster, and E. W. Osborne. The Clerk reported that the several road contracts were progressing favorably. He said that on making inquiry about the letting of a contract by Mr Mann in the absence of the Chairman, he had found that it was an oversight by Mr Mann. After some discussion it was resolved— " That the Board having allowed the contractor to proceed with the work had ratified the contract." It was resolved to redeposit the sum of 44000 for twelve months, 41000 for six months, and the balance to current account. On the application of several ratepayers it was decided that the unformed portion of Rolleston street be formed, the labour gang to do the work. Mr Turner, agent for the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Company, wrote calling the attention of the Board to the condition of the footpath in front of the Company's premises. It was decided to attend to the work. Mr Dolomore having thrown up his contract it was decided tern vite tenders for the unfinished portion of the work, the Chairman to have power to let the work. An extension of time was granted ,to Mr Clifford, and Mr L. Manghan was allowed to cut the grass on Collins* road on the terms specified. Mr F. Windsor, on behalf of the village settlers, wrote asking the Board to form a footpath on each side of the road leading from Bakaia to Newtown, intimating that if the work was not done the inhabitants of the village settlement contemplated applying to have the place declared a township. The Board discussed the whole question of roads in the village settlement, and expressed themselves favorable to satisfying the wants of the village settlers. The Chairman read a letter from the Colonial Treasurer, informing the Board that the earn of 4564 3s 4d is at present placed to the credit of the Board for the benefit of the Bakaia village settlement. It was resolved that a meeting of the parties interested be called to hear what is required to be done in the way of roads. In the matter of the cost of forming the boundary road, the Clerk was instructed when forwarding the cheque for the Board's share to draw the attention of the Mount Hutt Road Board to the highness of the price for sowing grass seed thereon. Mr -W. L. ABan, who was in attend—ace, said he had no recollection of ever giving Messrs Harper instructions to prepare the transfer of certain land for a gravel pit. He wished to have the matter settled without loss of time. This was ultimately agreed to.
