SOUTHBRIDGE.
The annual meeting of householders for the election of a School Committee for the ensuing year was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening, when only about thirty were present. Mr E.G. Staveley was voted to the chair. He read the report, which stated that the finances were in a satisfactory state, there being a credit balance of —1318s in the Bank on the 31st December. The annual examination had not resulted so satisfactorily as had been hoped, owing principally to the irregular attendance and the fact that each class had to be examined in a higher standard than formerly. The Committee had decided to enforce the compulsory clause of the Education Act. —On the motion of Mr Howe, seconded by Mr Stanley, the report a3 read was adopted.— The nomination of members was then proceeded with, but, only three householders present consenting to stand, the Chairman said it would have to be his unpleasant duty to report to the Board that they had been unable to form a Committee. —A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
