O'Brien, oharged with stealing a watch and chain at t_e Ashburton, was remanded to appear at that place on February Abbott. — James Wright and Margaret Wright were brought up oharged with having set fire to a bouse in Lincoln road on February 18th. Mr McConnel appeared for defendants* The polioe not being prepared to go on with tbe case, a remand was granted till February 28th. Bail was accepted, themselves in £100 eaoh, aud eaoh two sureties of £100 eaoh. Bbbaoh op THa L-OBKsnre Aot.—Edward Hiorns, lioensee of the Central Hotel, Christohuroh, was charged with having sold liquor there on Sunday, January 29th, to persons other than travellers. The oase had been adjourned on two previous occasions Mr Holmes now appeared for the defence. Arthur McMahon, a carpenter, deposed that on the night of Sunday, January 29 tb, at about half-past ten, he and another person went into the hotel kept by defendant. They and the night porter had drinks, served by the nisbt porter, and paid for by witness. Wm. Eoyle stated that on the sight of January 29th he was boots at the Central. He went into the hotel with the last witness, and they bad drinks, for which McMahon paid. For the defence, E. Hiorns deposed that on the night in question the night porter did not leave his bedroom until after eleven o'olook. Neither of the two witnesses before examined were in the house before eleven. "Eoyle was then under notice to leave. McMahon bad often been turned ont of the hotel for refusing to pay for drinks he obtained. Agnes Oloudsley, barmaid, stated that she had the key of the bar on tbe night in question up till eleven o'clock. She did not see McMahon in the bouse. Robert Fullarton, night porter, stated tbat on the night named he was in bed till after eleven o'olook. Up to midnight neither Eoyle nor McMahon were in the hotel. McMahon went there after 1 a.c_, engaged a bed and called for some drinks, which witness served, McMahon refused to pay for the drinks or for his bed, and witness turned him out. Eoyle hid no drink, and McMahon did not pay any money. D. 3, Roper, compositor, corroborated Fullarton's evidence. Constable I "Gorman atated that MoMahon and Eoyle vent to bim at abont 2 30 a.m. on January 30tb, and complained that MoMahon had been assaulted in the Central Hotel at about one o'clock. E. Bch.c_.eld itated that he waa lodging, and waa present in the Central on the night in question. The landlord sent him upstairs at eleven o'clock j to call -he eight porter, who waa in bed, and j after being called by witness, did not make hia appearance downstairs for ten minutes or a quarter of an hour afterwards. He was present when McMahon waa admitted some time after 1 a.m.; Eoyle wa» not there. Witness was sure of that. He and MoMahon threw dice for drinks. McMahon lost, but did not pay fox the drinks. The Magistrate said be would not convict on tha evidence offered for the prosecution. Before bearing Sohofield, he waa thinking of ordering an information to be laid against MoMahon for perjury; he was not so -fear about that now, bnt would take time to consider, and act as required. Case dismuaed. Bbbach o_ ibb Stamp Act.—J. MeV_y Baud, manager of the Suffolk Brewery, waa charged with having neglected to affix a doty

Mr Baud admitted that by mistake there had been no stamp affixed, i A witnfsa was called, who proved that the beer was a present to a pionio party, and Mr >S_ird, when giving it, had said that as he was giving aWay the beer he thought no stamp waa nec-nery. 'Mr Baird said that the facte were as a.atod. When he looked up the Aot he found he was wrong, and he reported the matter to the Collector of Customs. Tbe Magistrate said he felt bound to inflict the fine required by the Aot, but he had little doubt that if the matter wero properly represented to the Government the fine would be returned. Fined £20, and ordered to pay expenses of witneaaes, 10a. Mißoßi___frßOU9. —A ease against John Murphy for injuring property belonging to J. H. Lewis was dismisssd.—Philip Gregory, Daniel Howard, aud W. J. Brooks were each fined 5i each for plying with cabs without licenses.—-Joiada Thomas, whose dog attacked George Mason, was ordered to pay 9s 6d for damages; the dog had been destroyed.— John Lea and John Murphy were eaoh fined 10s for allowing cattle to wander at large.
