Mr E. DeMestre at Geelong won the Gold Cup with Guinea, the Sires' Produoe Stakes with Navigator, and obtained second place to Sir Thomas Elder's colt Guesswork in the Barwon Stakes with Sylranus. Bnyal Maid won the Mares' Produoe Stakes, and Gourtenay the Geelong Handioap. The weights for the Sydney Gold Oup and Hawkesbury Handicap are published. Progress heads the list in the former with 9tt 71b, the weights running down to sst 71b, and in the Hawkesbnry Wellington comes first at 9st 31b, running down again to sit 71b. Progress is scratched for the Australian Cup and Newmarket Handioap. Mr Towns' sale of yearlings realised £10,650. Mr 'X l . S. Clibbom has die posed of the imported horse The Drummer, by Bataplan out of My Niece, to the proprietor of Tocal. With snob, marea «a will be obtainable for him at Tocal, The Drummer should make a name for himself. The stud of thoroughbreds, the property of the late Sir J. P. Bell, will be sold by auction on the 3rd of March. The lord of the harem ia the imported horse Epigram, by Bair Athol from Ellermire, and this wellbred animal oan already claim to Wheatear, Canary, Othello, Waterloo, Lothair, Sir Oliver, and other winners. The collection of brood mares includes some very ohoioe specimens, one of the gems being GadeauVby the Bngliih Derby winner liord Lyon, from The Gam, dam of the English Oaks winner, Begalia. Another nicely bred mare is Olive, by Orest from Keepsake; and Sundial, by Wild Dayrell from Miss Slick, is a well bred animal. Legend also belongs to an excellent family, for she is by Cathedral from 8/bills, sister of the celebrated Nanoy, winner of the Chester Gap, &3. Caprice, Oriana, Emoute, Adven< turese, and other mares are well worthy the attention of racing men. The horses in training include Lord Clifden, Sir Oliver, and Oadmua j and among the fillies there are some by Epigram from the imported mares, which should be an acquisition to any stud. It is proposed to sell the estate and stud in one lot, o? to start a company to work the affair. Xhe yearling Tubal Cain—Ace of Hearts colt, has been sold to go fca Queensland. The case against Mr Frank and others, arrested on the Geelong course in connection with the totalisator, has been dismissed. The crowded Court gave a hearty ohoer when the decision was announoed. Speuking of the totalisator aa an instrument for betting, the "Australasian" says:—"The surroundings of tie totalisator are by no means so de moralising as those of the betting ring or of the sweeps. There is no hanging about publio houses where betting men congregate; no waiting on bookmakers to learn the odds; no late hours or smoking and drinking, the usual accompaniments of those who baok horses and wait about the betting haunts. The legalisation of the totalisator would cripple the bookmaking gentry considerably, and divert a good deal of money from their pookets, hence we need not wonder at their undisguised delight when they saw poor Franck and the rest taken off to durance vile. A reaotion, however, has now taken place, and we hope next time the Totalisator Bill comes before Parliament that the eyes of some of its opponents will be opened, and that the question will be argued fairly on its merits. The action of the polioe at Geelong may, after all, be productive of good.
