BOROUGH COUNCILS.
LYMELTON.
The regular fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday night. Present—The Mayor, Ore. Macdonald, Chalmers, Hawkins, McOlatohie, Weyburn. The newly elected successor to Mr P. Cunningham, Or. Reed, took hie seat. Letters were read as fellows.-—From the Postmaster-G-eneral with reference to the Governor's proposed visit, April Bth. A reception committee, consisting of the Mayor, and Cm. Macdonald and McOlatohie with power to act, were appointed. A letter from Mr W. B. Allwright, complaining that the storm water ran down over his section in St. David's street. Referred to foreman of works to report upon. The foreman of works report, informing Council [ot work done in construe ting concrete channels, was read. It stated that a man-hole leading into the sewer on section 45 existed. Mr R>dcliffe was about to build there, and the report recommendei that the man-hole be arched over. It was so -ordered. The works committee reported on Messrs Garforth and Lee'e slaughter yard, that the committee had visited the premises and found it in excellent order and scrupulously clean. The committee had suggested one or two improvements to the proprietors, which, if made, would obviate I all further offensiveness and remove ground of complaint. The committee recommended the lioenie be granted to Messrs Garforth and Lee for another twelve months, the suggested improvements to be made under the supervision of the foreman of works. The committee's report was adopted. The engineer reported an increase in the supply -of water from the wells. His report re the alterations required was left with the works committee, with power to act. Accounts aggregating £101 0j 41 were passed. Mr J. 8. Wiloox was appointed auditor. Or. Beed, as successor to Or. Cunningham, was appointed a member of the fire prevention, finance, and water supply committees. The Mayor said he had gone to considerable trouble to oommunioate with the Government, by telegraph and by mail, in respect to the appointment of a Resident Magistrate, and. he regretted to inform the Counoil that to his last Communications to the Government he had received no reply whatever. He considered Lyttelton was being treated very shabbily, though he had done all he could do in his position of Mayor. He thought that Council should take cognizinoe of the matter in some very positive manner. He would suggest that Council piss a resolution embodying the sense of the community in the matter. The Government had not anewered his letter; it might be, however, gracious enough to take notice of the action of the Counoil. Letters from Lyttelton, indeed, did not appear to give the Government any concern ; there were, already, fire or six letters unanswered by the Government connected with business of the Borough. On motion of Cr. Chalmers, the Mayor was empowered to write to the Government, as under a resolution of the Council. Notice of Motion.—By Or. Chalmers—" That the Council endeavour to acquire a site for a public slaughterhouse. That a committee be appointed to inquire ai to available sites, and all other information bearing on the matter, and to report."
