THIS Company is organised in resoonse to the wish of a la ge number of land owners and ratepayers residing within the Rnkaia, Ashburton, Mount Hutt, and Alford Forest districts. It is proposed with a view to the thorough opening up of the above-mentioned dist'icts to commence the line iv the towu°liip of South Rakaia, exieuding thence in a south-westerly direction a distance of 5 miles, thenc9 w sterly 6 miles to a junction. Thence one branch of the line wi 1 proceed in a westerly direction to a terminus near the Methven pos>-office, being in length 10-J miles fi-iim the j n. tioii. The other branch of the line will proceed from the junction to a terminus on the south ide of the north branch of tho Ashburton river at a place known as Gongb's crossing The leugth of this branch of line will be about 16 miles from the junction. The Directors have laid off the above-men-tioned ines in order that the advantages derived from a rai way may be fairly and equally distributed throughout tlie districts th-ongh which the lines pa c s. One of the lines will especially meet the requirements of the Rakaia Mount hutt, and the northern par. of.the Alford Forest districts. Tlie o.her line after passing through many properties already in an advanced stage of cnltivation, will be of special advantage to the inhabitants of the district at <ho southern end of Alford Forest and the North Ashburton district. Tenders have been invite! for the survey of the lines.and the book of reference and a plan of the railway will be made and deposited as soon as possible, in accordance with the provisions of the District Railways Act. 1877. The Directors do not anticipate that it will be Becessary to acquire much land for the lines of railway, a3 many of the land owners have promised to give land free of cost, The Directors have . pecially selected these lines of railway, with a view to the rating being adjusted as fairly as possible in accordance with the classification of lands under thp District Railways Act, 187-. The Dirf otors have already met with a large ' amount of support, half the number of shares having been already applied for. The Chief Office is to be established in Christchurch, and at present at Messrs Hanmeb and Harper's offices, Hereford street. Plans can be i-een. and bad on application at the offices of the Company, and at Son,th r. a k a ia Railway Station. Post Qffires, Barrhill and Methven, Morgan's and Hood's Hotels, and at the County Council Chambers, Aahhorton. The Branches of the Union Bank of Australia at Christchurch, Ashburton, and Timaru, _»re no*, prepared to receive applications for shares.
