There has scarcely been so much enquiry for wool nrivately during the last fortnight, but as stocks in the hands of dealers and manufacturers are low, and business has improved notwithstanding mat the quantity for offer will be larger than expected, we do not think it likely that prices will recede at the next sales, especially if we should have a lair amount of competition from abroad. The arrivals to date are as follows :— Bales ! The wheat'market continues to decline, but the fall is more marked on the white descriptions than the red. Adelaide is now selling at 59s to 60s ex granary, the finest Tasmanian or New Zealand only brings 60s, and very fair parcels are to be had for 50s to 575. Flour is dull of sale, but prices remain about the same. TALLOW AND HIDES. The tallow market has continued dull, witn a limited demand for all sorts. The sales to-day were flat, and of 1,545 casks, Australian, offered only 73b casks were sold, and we quote the prices of good to fine quality mutton from 40s to 418 6d, and beef 38s to 39s 6d per cwt. Hides are unaltered in value, and we quote good New Zealand heavy and liglit •weights from frfcd to 6fd per lb. NEW ZEALAND HEMP. There has been no improvement in tbe demand for this fibre since our last, and prices remain unaltered, with only a retail business doing, dealers buying for immediate wants only. PRESERVED TINNED MEAT. We are able to report some improvement in tbe demand, and several parcels have been sold to arrive at late prices. Several importers are holding in anticipation of higher rates, and as the importations are falling off to some extent, we look for an improvement later in the season. Melbourne.—The "Argus." of the 21st, reports "In the import markets this forenoon business showed no activity whatever, and sales were coufined to supplying ordinary wants and executing country trade orders. Nothing of a special character was allowed to transpire. Breadstufls show no activity whatever. Flour is moving off in bakers lots at £13 to £13 ss, bags returned. Wheat is wanted, and 5s 9d can be got for prime quality, but owing to the paucity of supplies, there is really nc room for transactions. Cats are very firm, and 58 can be obtained for very poor feeding qualities, while up to 5s 3d is freely offering for anything like good feeding. Maize is selling in trade parcels at ss, Dundee goods are coming into more notice. Cornsacks are in fair request, and sales are making at 10j 3d. Victorian-made sacks are now being produced by Messrs Wm. Miller and Co equal in every reaped to imported goods. Woolpacks are inquired for and sales are making at 3s 3d.
