The Virginiua affair is at an end, so far as concerns the vessel herself. She is stated to have foundered in a gale off Cape Fear on the 26th December, and the United States frigate Ossipee, which should have brought her to New York, arrived without her. The survivors of her crew were on landing examined by the New York authorities, and released. The"ltalic," of the 17th ultimo, announces that an admirable statue of Hercules was discovered a few days ago at Esquiline. It is larger than life, and is intact, with the exception of the feet and left arm, which are broken.
A private letter, published in the "Argus," dated January 17th, received from a Fijian settler who has had good opportunities of obtaining information with regard to the the proceedings of the Imperial Commissioners, says :—" If all the leading chiefs in Fiji are agreeable, annexation may take place. If six chiefs dissent, the British Government will not take Fiji, though the others go down on their knees for it. In any case we cannot expect a reply for six month* —most likely twelve,"
