Middleton was read, asking permission to place a trap door in the footpath for hie cellar at Middleton'e Hotel, Rayen street. ; Mr C. B. Dudley eenfc notice of Wβ intention to build on the section lately pitaed by Mr Janaway in Charles street. ; M A telegram was read from the i Secretary for Public Works, asking to be informed whether the present toll keeper "Qt \ Swing bridge was willing to surrender hie interest, and if payment was to be mdde him, whether the Council could arrange it for the Government j ;also| asking what sum the Council would want toi repair and manage the bridge, and the earn, -required for annual maintenance of the Main road. '■■■:.. .'»-.> Or Taylor moved, Cr McDonald seconded, " That Mr Middleton's application be granted, provided the trap door is pnt in subject to the approval of the works committee." Carried. i> f The Mayor, in reference to the telegram about the Swing bridge, it would bo more convenient to consider the matter for a day or two, and hold an adjourned meeting on Friday. At present the bridge required repairs to the extent ef £300, and it wonld be a questidn for the Council to decide in wliat way they would undertake to look after it, ' Cr Blackwell observed that he'did not care how coon it was, taken .over, as toe planking wanted renewing , . , Cr Taylor moved, Cr M'Dpnald seconded--"That the accounts—foreman's salary, &i 16s lid ; clerk's salary, #5 6s 8d ; pay-sheet, £2 11s; J. Bims (carting), £1 .Iβ ; LB. Sheatb (drain pipes), £10 6a 4ds B. Klu* (drags), £2 5s ; total, £26 6s Ud—bepaesea for payment." Carried* ~ f The receipts for the fortnight were—renc of bridge, £44 14s; river reserves, rents, £2 9s 6d • and rates, 158; making a balance at the general account of £337 Iβ 4d ; ana in the bridge reserve fund, £317 I3s 9d. Cr Blackwell drew attention to two colverte in Raven street which on Saturday were insufficient to carry away tae ram water, hoping that the works ctiflHnitWe would attend to them.'
