'• SIR, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of letters noted in the margin, and to express the regret of the Government that a reply has been so long delayed. The Government, after inquiry into the matter, finds no record of any agreement entered into with any party or parties to cut, cart away, and sell timber from the tramway reserve and roads at Little. River.

" With regard to the request of the Board, that if no such agreement exists, the timber on the reserve and roads be placed in the hands of the Little River Road Board for the benefit of the district, the Government, after full consideration, have decided not to part with the timber on the reserve, but as to the timber on the roads, the Government will not interfere in the matter, the Board already having control over the roads, and being able to deal with them in such way as it may deem best for the public advantage. " I have the honour to be, Sir, " Your obedient servant, " Thomas M. Maude. "Secretary for Public Works. "To the Chairman " Little River Roard Board."
