ENGLISH COMMERCIAL.
Messrs Miles Bros, and Co report on January 13th, as follows :— WOOL. Rather more activity has been displayed in, the manufacturing districts since the , turn of the year with a feeling that trade is likely to improve, and some of our English growers are holding their wools for better prices. The next sales will open On the 12th Febrnary, when we expect to see November, prices fully maintained, as money is easier, and coal, the high price of which has been severely felt by our manufacturers, appears to be getting lower. Trade in America is also improving so that we may look for increased competition from abroad. The arrivals for these sales to date are as follows, viz. :— ','■' ".. ':\ l.: : '•.:",' . ; '."' ■'' : . '* Bales. New "Sonth. Wales and Queensland... 5931 Victoria... ''' ..." ...... ... 6593 : South Australia ... ... ... 1372 Western Australia Tasmania ... ... ... ... 170 New Zealand ... 2266 Cape of Good Hope ... ... ... 17,038 Total ... ... ... ... 33,370 .., ; ;< WHEAT AND PLOUB. : - The market for foreign wheat has again improved and Australian wheat has realised aehigh as 72s per 496 for finest quality, but ordinary parcels sell at about 71s. New Zealand, wheat rules from about 64s to 70s according to cample, but the prices for average shipments would be about 65s to 66s per 4961b5. We do not think there will be any material alteration in the trade for the next fonr or five months, as stocks in granaries and cargoes afloat are much below the usual average. New Zealand flour may be quoted at 46s to 48s per 2801bs. ' TALLOW AND HIDES. The tallow market has been very quiet with scarcely any alteration in value; the present quotations for good to fine New Zealand'mutton being, 41s 6d to 42s ; and fair to fine beef tallow, 38s to 38s 9d per cwt. The demand is limited, and there are no immediate signs of improvement on present rates; and it is possible that prices-may .become still easier, should supplies from the colonies come forward freely. ■ .; ■ ■ ~ Hides continue quiet without alteration in value, viz. : New Zealand of average quality, sid;tosfd per lb. . . . NEW ZEALVND HEMP. Since our last report very little business has been done in this fibre at a reduction of about 20s per ton; The market is very dull, and as Manilla is declining in price, we shall probably see it still lower. : ' ,X , ■:-."■• riPSESEEVED MEATS; •" "•" ! Prices remain about the same as those last advised, viz.: about s£d for 6 lbs mutton ; and 6Jd to 6Jd for 6 lbs boef, with a fair demand. -. , Bank rate, 4 percent.
