A meeting of the Ellesmere Eoad Board was held .at Leeston on Wednesday, July 5, ISil,' iit ■vrhifch were present—E. J. Lee (chairman), E. Gillett, J. Rennie, and G. B. Woodman, minutes of June 1 were read and confirmed,
A letter was read from the Secretary of Public Works asking for, certain returns with reference to the resources of the district to lay before the General Assembly, with a view to railway extension.
The Overseer was directed to acknowledge the receipt, and promise full returns when the roll is completed for the ensuing year. . A letter from the Secretary of Pubjic Works, dated 20th June, asking for returns of income and expenditure for last year to July 1, which was referred to the treasurer for reply.
A letter from the Secretary of Public Works, informing the Board that the sum 0f£162 and £150 were payable on application at the Provincial Treasury.
The Chairman informed the Board that he had made application to the Government on the Ist instant to have the money paid into the Union Bank on the Board's account.
A letter from Mr D. Wilson was read complaining that a culvert to his land on Boundary Creek road had been removed by Mr W. Woodman. The culvert had been already, complained of as, stopping the water,"and had been referred to the overseer, who reported it to be too small for water. A letter from James Lake was read, complaining of a great accumulation of water on his land and asking the Board for relief. From the evidence of the overseer the Board not see how to help him till the creek below was cleared, as there was no outlet.
Letters from Mr T. R. Fisher were read relating to road drainage through his land. The Chairman read his reply to the former. The Board offered- to complete the drainage to Woody Creek, the natural outlet. A letter from H. D. Gardiner was read asking for a tile culvert, site of New Bridge, engaging to put it in. The overseer was directed to furnish tiles.
A petition from Mr Hughes and others was read, asking for the formation of Irwell Creek road. The Board agreed to meet their wishes, on their engaging to pay one-third the cost, A letter from Mr A. McLachlan was read, asking for a culvert to relieve his land of, water. It was referred to the overseer to report upon. The overseer pointed out that the Irwell bridge was unsafe. He was directed to relay it with stringy bark. The overseer was authorised to complete the drainage on Taylor's road by a culvert and drain for the creek. Mr William Andebsox appeared to ask assistance for a drain from. Ludiman s. He undertook to make a drain. 7ft. top; 3ft. 6in. bottom, , and 3ft. deep, for 7s 6d per chain. The Board undertook to pay two-thirds at this rate. Jfr Coe appeared to ask assistance in gettin" nd of water-brought down Mr Fisher's land from Leestonoroad. The Board agreed to find aa outlet on Mr Coe paying £o of the expense, temngiprfiYiously got a release from Mr Jieher from future liability as to road and putting in drain pipes.
The Overseer reported that 'Be' had been' 'trrraWe'to'gefc-t'b.fr btmk- pass-book made, up to. ttie end of June; but the Board's account was now on the right side with the bank.
The repdrt for the past month was examined, and the pay-sheet, amouuting to £52 15s passed for payment.
