LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of this Couuoil was held on Monday evening at six p.m. PresentMessrs Ward (chairman), Grubb, Wilkin, Balestiee, Willcox, and Wright. The minutes of the former meeting were read, and, after some discussion, confirmed. The Clerk announced that the sum of £21 15s 6d had been received since last meeting.
The following correspondence, &0., was then considered :—
To Mr Hawkins, accepting his tender for kerosene.
To Mr DOyly, requesting his attendance at the Council this evening. A complaint respecting the water Bupply, signed by several persons, was considered. The Chairman undertook to apply to Mr Dobson with respect to fixing a pump at the tunnel, for the purpose of supplying water for cattle.
Mr DOyly, solicitor to the Council, here entered, and stated that lie would prefer giving his legal opinion as to summoning for rates in writing. . After some opposition from Mr Wright, the Council acceded to Mr D'Oyly's request.
Some discussion ensued with respect to the drainage on the road between tho drill-shed (on its present site), and the gaol. , Mr Balestiee moved— " That tho matter be deferred till next week." Carried.
Tho Chairman then read a letter from Wm. Donald, Esq., K.M., relative to the advisability of allowing convalescent patients from the Hospital the use of the hot baths at the public bathing place.
Mr Balestiee spoke strongly against the idea ; he would do anything for the benefit o/ tho sick, but after conversing with the custodian of the baths his former opinion was confirmed, viz., that great injurywould be done if convalescents were allowed the use of the public bath. He (Mr Balestiee) was desirous that every assistance should be given by the Council, but considered that if tho public warm bath was allowed for the use of convalescent patients it would have the effect of deterring people from using the baths.
Mr Wright expressed an opinion that as far as sea bathing was concerned there could be no objection. With respect to the hot bath he could not express the same opinion. Mr Willcox thought that another room might be erected for the patients.
The Chairman, who had entertained the opinion that copvalescents should be admitted, here agreed with the views of Mr Willcox.
Mr Wright moved that a sum not exceeding £5 should be expended for the purpose of building a shed for hospital patients.
Mr Willcox moved that the Custodian bo consulted on the subject.
After a Jong discussion it was decided that Dr. Donald be referred to the Custodian, and that the Council express their wish to render any assistaace in their power.
The Inspector of Nuisance's report was read and received.
