Monday, April 28. The usual weekly meeting was held on the above date. Present—All the members. The following papers were laid before the Council by the Chairman:— A letter from the Provincial Secretary conveying the Superintendent's approval of the bye-laws. A letter from Mr. Wylde stating that Fapanui Bridge would be repaired by the Government. A letter from the Provincial Secretary respecting the transfer to the Council of the Public Reserves within the city. Report from the Town Surveyor on various matters connected with the repair of the streets. A Report from the Committee on accounts. An authority from the Superintendent appointing the Town Surveyor to give permission in writing, referred to in subsections 23 and 24 of the Canterbury Police Ordinance. The repair of Worcester street Bridge, at an estimated cost of £6, was ordered to be undertaken. The Surveyor was authorised to obtain at once a supply of timber of suitable sizes not exceeding 5,000 feet, for culverts, &c The Surveyor was instructed to advertise in the newspapers, cautioning the public against removing the material off any of the streets in the City of Christchurch without his written authority. It was agreed to appoint a Standing or Street Committee, to superintend the carrying out of the orders of the Council; the Committee for the first month to consist of Messrs. Alport, Gould, and the Chairman. An application from J. Green to erect a vegetable stand under the verandah of the Market Hall was rejected. The Surveyor was instructed to report upon the best means of draining that portion of the city between the Windmill road and Montreal street, and the probable cost of the same. AUo, to prepare specifications and estimates for metalling Colombo street, from the Bridge to Armagh street -<41so, to report by Monday next, upon the cost of forming Salisbury street, between the Whately road and Antigua street; and also the expence of forming St. Asaph street, from the Ferry road to Manchester street. Oα the motion of Mr. Miles, the Council adjourned at { past 10 till Wednesday the 30th instant Wednesday, 30. The Council met this evening principally for the consideration of tenders. A committee which had been appointed to enquire into the beet means of obtaining a supply of gravel for the streets, reported the result of their enquiries. Upon this report it was decided that at present it should, if possible, be obtained either from section 723, or from Montreal street, and that renewed application should be made for permission to take gravel from the Government Domain. The following tenders for forming and metalling Cashel street from Sumner road to Manchester street were opened, viz., J. H. Dillon, Woodman and Wright, Stephen Egan, and Thomas GemmilL The last tender, as the lowest, was accepted. Tenders from J. Green, J. Spond and Sons, R. Taylor, and S. Egan, for the supply of horses and carts were also read. The one from S. Egan was accepted An application respecting the formation of Tuam street was ordered to be sent to the Provincial Government, as referring to one of the thoroxighfares which the Government are for the present to maintain. Canterbury Kiflk Volunteers. —The Christchurch companies contended for the Government prizes on Wednesday last at the new butt, Hagley Park. Although the early morning looked promising enough, the event proved that a worse day for the purpose could not have l>een selected, for about 10 o'clock a cold south-west wind prevailed, bringing •with it a disagreeable thick mist and rain,—such weather as, indeed, would greatly embarrass old marksmen, and totally disconcert a new hand As this was the first appearance of the newly formed band under the direction of Mr. Bonnington, a goodly number of visitors was naturally expected: very few, however, attended. The officers provided very liberally in the way of refreshments; and, doubtless, had the weather moderated, a goodly gathering of guests would have been present to do honor to their hospitality. We have no hesitation in saying that, after a little practice, the new band will do much towards inducing many of the old members to resume their places in the ranks. The following are the highest scores made:—W. Meddings, 27; T. Johnstone, 22 ; H. Lowther, 19; T. G. Hilliard 18 ; EL B. Bishop, 18; G. Willmer 18. We regret to hear from a correspondent at Timaru that Mr. Griffiths, manager at Mr. Lockhart's station, has been drowned in the Waitangi, whilst crossing cattle.

LYTTELTON. The Lyttelton company mustered in Polhill's Bay on Monday last. Eleven men only presented themselves. The highest score was made by Mr. Boys, of No. 1 company, who made 24 points; Mason, 23 ; Fulton, 22; G. Tombs, 18 ; Bamford, 18; the remainder from 17 to 6. We hope the volunteers will remember that his Excellency Sir George Grey is likely to visit the province about the end of the present or the beginning of the next month : those who are backward in their drill should stir themselves so as to be able to take part with credit to the force in whatever arrangements are made for receiving his Excellency.
