WHAT HOUSEWIVES MUST NOT DO IN NEW FLATS

Tenants of. new fiats at Goodmayes, near Ilford, Essex, are being given a sheet of rules as they move in. It says that after 10 a.m. they must NOT— Beat or shake carpets; Take refuse to receptacles; Have a call from the coalman. And they must not— Clean their windows less than once a fortnight; Hang out their washing after midday; Hang wireless aerials or poles from the roof or windows. Said Alderman A. C. Cooper: “Soon tenants will have their ser-geant-major, who will get the ‘troops fell in’ every morning.” Councillor Mrs Watts, of the housin committee, said: “As usual, it is the housewife being penalised again. “It would be mare sensible to tell them not to keep pigeons or keep their windows shut and radios turned down.” Mrs L. Bawer has just moved in with her husband and two babies. She said: “We were so grateful to get a flat we did not ask about regulations. It has come as a shock. “I can wash about ten or 12 napkins at a time, then the rest of my laundry has to be sent out.” Another tenant said: “We shall have to start washing in the middle of the night to have it dry by midday. We have been promised a green where we can hang out the clothes.” And the reason for the rules ? The council wants to “raise the tone” of the district. Says housing committee chairman Councillor S. Taylor: “The regulations are quite mild in comparison with those in other parts of London.”
