GALATEA DEFEATS ROTORUA IN FIRST GAME A most enjoyable two days cricket were spent when a visiting Rotorua team played Galatea at Galatea and were defeated by 56 runs, Players were billeted in the district by Galatea Club members. A Table Tennis evening was held to entertain the visitors •on the Saturday evening with Rotorua winning by a substantial margin. Cricket scores:— Galatea 114 (M. Caie 31, R. Nettleton 27, D. Goodhue 1 for 9. 4} UNITED DEFEAT GALATEA BY 155 RUNS The 1949 cricket season opened at Whakatane on Saturday when United defeated Galatea in a non-com-petition game by 155 runs on the first innings at the Whakatane showgrounds. In their first and only innings United knocked up a convincing 229, the top scorers being the Bay of Plenty representatives, I. Wyatt and W. J. McKenzie with 107 and 105 respectively. The Galatea bowlers made a determined attack with B. Wilson taking five wickets for 68 runs. A 35 by J. Rowlands in the first innings total of 74 for Galatea was the highest double figure score. Many of the batsmen were considerably worried by the accurate fowling of N. E. Rigden who claimed four wickets for a dozen runs. Galatea followed on their second innings and at stumps had lost five wickets for 102, the top batsman agaih being Rowlands with 62.
