Household Hints

When blankets are being stored away for the summer a good way to protect them from moths is to place pieces of ordinary yellow soap between the folds and then wrap the blankets in newspaper. XXX Shake lace curtains free from dust and fold each one to about three-quarters of a yard square. Keep them folded while washing, so that the weight of the water will hot break the fine strands when the curtains are lifted out. XXX Muslin curtains will retain their colour if rinsed in alum water. If they are much soiled, rinse them four or five times in plain water, finishing with the alum solution. When hanging them out to dry keep them quite straight, after which they may be replaced at the windows without being ironed. Two ounces of alum to a gallon of water is the right strength.
