MAORIS CAUGHT WITH BAG OF PROTECTED BIRDS
On June 6 last Mane Rehe, sawmill hand, Waiohau, and his son Tahawera Rehe borrowed a .303 rifle and went off into the bush shooting. They were later caught by a ranger who found 10 native pigeons and six tuis in their possession. He took the birds and confiscated the rifle. When they were before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday each pleaded guilty to two • charges of taking protected game and having such game in their possession. Mane Rehe was fined £5, costs 30/-, translation fee 5/-, and £5, costs 10/-. Tahawera Rehe was fined £5, costs 10/-, translation fee 5/-; and £5, costs 10/-. A further charge of obstructing the ranger in the course of his duty, in that they gave him wrong names and addresses was dismissed.
