FIFTY YEARS AGO

The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago:— Ploughing is now the order of the day throughout the district. It is noticeable that a considerable area of the No. 1 Papamoa block bordering on the Te Puke Road, is now being prepared for various crops. Nearly all this area was three years ago in its virgin state and there are now seven or eight dwellings in the three miles or so along which the block extends'.

The cattle race is now in rapid progress on Victoria Wharf. Mr Adams, the contractor, cut and fitted nearly all the materials before commencing work on the wharf itself. From an aesthetic point of view, the structure, as was pointed out by one of the council, will scarcely pass muster, and though it may prove both financially and commercia ly an improvement to Ihe town, it cannot be called so from the artistic point of view. From its very nature, it will prove anything but an adornment.
