PRODUCTION OF N.Z. SOFTWOOD
SUPPLYING AUSTRALIAN REQUIREMENTS It was believed that the huge forest of exotic pines on the pumice country would ultimately supply a significant proportion of Australia's softwood importations previously obtained from Scandinavia and North America, stated the Director of the State Forest Service (Mr A. R. Entrician), in a recent report. That would be possible, he added, only by the operation of mass production mills in which sawing costs could be reduced sufficiently to permit comoetition with Scandinavia and North America. It was imperative in the interest of future generations that the exploitation of native forests be limited » to the minimum consistent with satisfying essential requirements.
