NEW TRAINING CLASS
THAMES CARPENTRY CENTRE applications from EX-SERVICEMEN Early next month another class of trainees will be entering the Rehabilitation Carpentry Training Centre at Thames. This will be chc eignth class since the centre first opened. The Rehabilitation Department is taking applications for this next class from ex-servicemen ot the recent war who feel they would be suited to the trade of carpentry and who are not already qualified in any other trade or occupation. Not only men with overseas service will bu eligible for entry, but also exhomeservicemen and ex-members of J Force. A recent Government, decision also made eligible foi entry into trade training centres ex-mem-bers of the Empire forces, apau from assisted settlers, who have settled in New Zealand. Rehabilitation trade trainees from the Thames centre had by the eno of June completed five houses and 9 further 37 were under constiUv--tion. All of these houses were in Thames. Contracts for 16 houses besides these are being undertaken in Paeroa, and trainees will stan. on some of these half-way thiougn the present month. . . The first few months of training are spent indoors gaining basic knowledge of the trade and general problems of construction. This is followed by eight months on State housing sites, helping build homes. A further year is spent on extension training, during which trainees gain greater speed and confidence. Wages start at £6 5s a week gross, with an increase to £6 7s 6d after 32 weeks. At the end of the first year of training full tradesmen’s _ rates are paid. Ex-servicemen _ m applying are advised to call for an interview at their nearest -Rehabilitation Office.
