OUT AND ABOUT

War Assets Realisation Nearly £15,000,000 has so far been received from the realisation of New Zealand's war assets. Most of the goods have been sold to Government departments. The highest individual sale was of ammunition. Food For Britain Meat coupons to the value of £ 7 lis and butter coupons to the .value of seven pounds and a'-half were received at the Tauranga Post Office last week in the food for Britain campaign. Cargo For Tauranga Rain early yesterday morning delayed unloading operations "on the coastal vessel, Kapiti, which arrived at Tauranga at 10 a.m. on Sunday with 114 tons of cargo in her holds. Fortunately, the weather cleared early and work was possible for the greater part of the clay. SchooJ Cafeterias Cafefarias in all schools have been recommended by the New Zealand Secondary School Boards' Association. The chief inspector of post-primary schools, Mr E. Caradus, said ho sympathised with the motion. When the present .building difficulties had been overcome, he would like to see a start made in the country, where pupils travelled many miles to consolidated schools. Million Timber Purchase The recent purchase of £1,000,000 worth of building timber from the United States and Canada was described as a fortunate deal, in view of the current world supply shortage, by the Sawmillers' Federation secretary, Mr Arthur Seed, in Wellington, but there were indications, he said, that it. would be substantially higher in price. The market could easily * absorb the quantity, and the importations would relieve pressure on New Zealand suppliers. A Fine Showing , Playing for the New Zealand Maori team which beat Manawatu by 14 points to 11 at PalniQrston North on Saturday, Jack Gardiner, a member of the Matakana Football Club, of Tauranga was prominent and made good swerving runs. W. Delamere, of Opotiki, wis also in the limelight and proved too clever and fast for his opposing number. The' Maoris were slow in settling down, but in the second half their backs played splendidly. They scored three tries, one converted, and a penalty goal. Only consistently solid tackling by Manawatu the Maoris from compiling a much bigger score. Rotorua Wins Shield The "Rotorua senior Rugby representatives, playing at Opotiki last Saturday, won the Te Hurinui Apanui Shield from the Opotiki team, which was without the services of W. Delamere, an outstanding back who played for Maoris against Manawatu! Opotiki had withheld all other challenges, though Tauranga and Rangitaiki, earlier in the season, played it to a draw. Last year Opotiki fielded one of the best fifteens seen in action for many a year and was not greatly troubled by any of the challenging sub-union sides. The final score on Saturday, was: Rotorua; 9, Opotiki G. However, Opotiki has the right to rechallenge as the final shield fixture of the 1946 Rugby football season.
