FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago: Tree topping is now going on extensively in the Borough and it would be well for the Council to pass some regulation as to the height at which pollards should be left. At present every tree-feller is a law unto himself and the general effect is decidedly unsightly. While travelling in a railway carriage in Spain, a robber stole a jewel belonging to the Duchess of Manchester. The thief, in making his escape, fell under the wheels of the carriage and had both his legs crushed. The jewels were recovered. Drought is being experienced in Germany and Austria as in France, and is causing considerable alarm among the farmers there. Alarming reports are coming in of the disastrous effects of the floods in the Geraldton district, Brisbane. The river rose 44 feet above the ordinary level. The lower parts of the town are' submerged, and the inhabitants have fled to the higher ground.
