ANOTHER GREAT SOVIET VICTORY

TARNOPOL FALLS TO RED ARMY

Whole German Garrison

Wiped Out

Over 13,000 Killed; 2000

Surrender

London. April 16. Another great Russian victory is announced by Moscow. At the western end of the long Russian front Marshal Zliukov's First Ukrainian

Army has captured Tarnopol. a railway junction and one of the main strongholds protecting the important German base of Lwow, 75 miles away. It fell after stubborn street fighting. The enemy garrison has been completely wiped out. More than 13,000 Germans have been killed and about 2000 surrendered. The Germans hurriedly reinforced the garrison when the Russians first threatened Tarnopol : early last month, but Marshal Zhukov's troops by-passed the town. When it was encircled the Germans made desperate attempts to relieve it and dropped supplies from the air. The Russians have also captured several places west and south-west of Tserkhov, nearly 45 miles south of Tarnopol. Moscow reveals that another 3 7,000 enemy troops were killed or captured during General Malinovsky's drive from the Bug to the Dniester between March 2 5 and April 12, a period which covered the capture of Odessa. Hundreds of tanks and guns, thousands of lorries and great quantities of other valuable war material were captured.
