IMPROVEMENT IN TUNISIA
AXIS ADVANCE NEAR QAIRWAN STOPPED
Britain's Attitude In North Africa Statement By Minister London, Jan. 25. The general situation in Tunisia is now showing improvement. The Axis advance north-west of Qairwan has been stopped. Further south Allied forces have raided enemy positions not far west of Sfax. This' attack by our troops indicates that Rommel's escape gap along the Tunisian coast is only some 3 5 miles wide.
United States forces in this raid took Sp prisoners and British forces took 50 in another sector.,
The naval base of Bizerta was bombed again on Saturday night and yesterday the port of Susa was again attacked in daylight. Allied fighters have been very active all over Tunisia.
Britain's Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Richard Law, speaking at Leeds to-day said that there was no need to be despondent about the situation in North Africa. The Allies had to build up a big organisation there before they could operate successfully on a large scale.
Mr Law said that the position of the Allies in North Africa was entirely different to that of the Germans in say France, Poland and Belgium. We were not there to enslave the people we were there to set them free. We could not adopt an attitude of restraint and coercion..
