MECHANIC JOE
ANSWERS OWNERS' PROBLEMS AN ELUSIVE TRANSMISSION KNOCK
Q. — I have had trouble with the gear box on my 1939 Hillman Minx. There is a distinct knock on first and
reverse gears, especially on reverse. I have had the gear box to pieces and still cannot solve the problem. Neither layshaft nor main shaft is bent, all gears are in perfect condition, all roller bearings are in order, and all other bearings are good. -I cannot see anything else wrong. — "S.L.S."..
A. —It is extremely difficult for the makers of your car, or anyone else, to give any definite advice without an opportunity of testing the car, but, in view of the extensive examination which has already been carried out, it seems doubtful whether the noise comes from the gear box. A careful check should be made of
the front and rear universal joints, particularly the front. There is a possibility that the needle rollers may have cracked up, and this would have the tendency to be more noticeable on the lower gears, i.e., first and reverse.
