HOME ARMY PAY

DETAILS OF INCREASES Large Family Benefit Distribution By Christmas Dating from November 1, the Army home service rates of pay and allowances will be those now paid to soldiers serving overseas. For many families the accrued increases will be a welcome fund for Christmas and the regular weekly additions should more than meet the increase in the cost of living, seeing that the soldier need make little outlay for personal clothing and is rationed by the Army. Following is a comparison of the old and new rates of pay per day for the various ranks, the pay week being one of seven days: Old rate New rate

xj i I'U x ........ ~ / Camp Allowances Cancelled Camp allowances formerly paid on the following scale are now terminated: — Non-commissioned officers from staff-sergeants upward, Is 6d a day; second-lieutenant to captain, 3s; major, 4s; lieutenant-colonel and upward, ss. The pay increases for the senior non-commissioned officers and the junior commissioned officers are largely offset by these cancellations. The separation marriage allowance to wives without children was formerly 3s 3d; now it is 3s 6d. To wives without children no domestic allowance was or is payable. Wives with children will receive, as' before, a separation allowance of 3s and for each child Is 6d. Their domestic allowance will be increased from Is 6d to 2s 6d. The Weekly Incomes There is now no limit to the "official” family. In the early days of the war men were not accepted for service if they had more than two children. Then the limit was fixed at three. Later the "official” family was made five. Now for ' every child an alloAvance is made notwithstanding the size of the family. For married private soldiers and their wives who are not in receipt of financial assistance the weekly incdmes are:

Subsistence Allowances The increases made in subsistence allowances will correct a past anomaly. Where a soldier is living at home the rate will be 3s a day instead of 2s 6d, and when he is living away from home it will 4s 6d instead of 2s 6d. Personnel on leave will receive subsistence of 3s a day, which necessarily means that they will have to draw on savings unless they are living at home. The new rates do not apply to the regular forces, whose pay has been usually higher than the old home service scale. Those attached to mobilised units will now find it advantageous to exercise their option to be placed on mobilised rates. The accrued increases, will be paid by special warrant before Christmas. It is anticipated that by next week the issue of these warrants will begin. ,
