The following is a summary of the latest war news: FURTHER HEAVY JAPANESE NAVAL LOSSES Tho U.S. Navy Department has just issujed the following announcement : The United States Navy has sunk nine more Japanese ships attempting to reinforce the enemy in the Solomons. Japanese losses were: Sunk, two large destroyers or cruisers, four destroyers, two troop transports, cue cargo ship. U.S. losses were one cruiser sunk and other ships damaged. TUNISIA Enemy resistance in Tunisia continues to stiffen but an Axis attack has been repulsed at Pont du Salis, south-west of Tunis. LIBYA General Montgomery's patrols are now probing and testing the enemy positions at El Agheila. The heavy guns of both sides are blazing away at each other. Allied night-fighters continue to straff the enemy all over the area. UNITED STATES Several hundred British military personnel have arrived in New York. They came from Casablanca in French Morocco where they were relieved by United States forces. RUSSIA The Russians have now almost reached the key town of Kotelnikovo on the Stalingrad-Rostov railway 110 miles from Stalingrad. They are now consolidating their positions all along the line. The Hvxl Army has by-passed the German fortress at Rzhev both to the north-west and the south-west. Russian ski troops and cavalry are deep in the enemy's rear. Rzhev is being subjected to a process of strangulation by the Russians as they sit astride the railway from Viazma, thus preventing any supplies from coming up from the main base at Smolensk. NEW GUINEA The Australians are speeding up their drive on the remaining Japanese positions. BURMA A British patrol has made a daring 15-day march into Burma, penetrating a distance of 350 miles. CHINA A message from Chungking states that 20 Japanese warships have been sighted off the coast oi Chekiang, south of Shanghai. Their destination is not known. R.A.F. OFFENSIVE R.A.F. planes have attacked enemy Shipping off the Cherbourg peninsula. They damaged several vessels. All our planes returned.
