LATEST WAR NEWS
The following is a summary of the latest war news:- —■ LIBYA Our advanced forces in Libya are maintaining contact with the enemy south of Benghasi. In order to do this they went down the track from Msns instead of taking the more northerly track. Our bombers and fighters attacking the fleeing Germans, south of Benghasi inflicted more heavy damage on enemy transport vehicles and petrol carriers. Many of the latter have been destroyed. This, for the remaining German forces, is a serious matter as they have a long distance to cover to Tripoli over a waterless desert. There is now little prospect of any supplies being able to reach them? all the ports to the east being now in our hands with the exception of Benghasi which is expected to fall at any moment. Some Messerschmitt fighters trying to straff our forward troops met with little success. TUNISIA There is still no news of any major action in Libya. R.A.F. fighters have attacked the aerodrome at Tunis and our Middle East bombers came from the other side to attack it the night before. RAID ON TURIN R.A.F. pilots who took part in the raid on Turin said that smoke from the blazing factories drifted light across the city obscuring the targets. Great damage is admitted by the Italians. This is the fourth 1500mile return trip to Italy on which we have suffered no losses. Italian anti-aircraft fire was experienced early in the raid but very soon ceased. The Italians are not very fond of manning their guns when a big air-raid is on. RUSSIA No further* changes arc reported from the Russian front. The Germans are still trying to find warmth and shelter in Stalingrad, but the only result of their efforts has been the loss of a few more fortified points to the Russians. FRANCE There is some doubt as to the actual fate of General Weygand. Rome radio confirms the report issued by the German controlled Paris radio that he Ims been arrested. A prominent French trade unionist who has just escaped from France to Britain, said that General Weygand was arrested but was shortly after released. This Frenchman said that when the Germans broke through into unoccupied France two German divisions passing through Lyons were given Avrong directions. There were two explosions in Lyons involving German troops. ' n the funeral of some British airmen who crashed in France on the return from a raid on Genoa he said thousands of French people came from 20 miles around and a large sum of money was subscribed for wreaths, which bore the inscription, "These men died to save the world." French school children sang "God bave the King" and the Marseillaise.
