WOMEN COULD DO IT

VIEWS OF MRS PITT WORLD IN A MESS "A woman runs a home better and cheaper than any man could —and I am sure she could run the country just as well," said Alderman Mrs May Pitt, of Glebe, recently. The present mess that the world is in is the result of men's efforts, so why not let the women try," says the Sydney Sun. Only woman delegate at the Local Government Conference, Mrs Pitt is the mother of six children. She had taken an active part in local organisations for 20 years and has been an alderman for 12 months. "There should be more women in public life," she said. "Women would not waste so much time castigating the Government, and would bring about real reforms if they were elected to public bodies." Mrs Pitt said she had a keen sense of the responsibility of a woman in a public position, and was very careful not to give anyone room to criticise her actions in any way. "For instance," she said, "I would not walk down the street without any stockings on, as I do not consider it would be in keeping with a woman in a public office. By the same token, I am always very careful that my language is moderate." Her husband, who is employed at a wool store, takes no part in public affairs.
