RECENT SUCCESSES

Chungking, Nov. 17

The. National Military Council has reported that Japanese casualties on the China front from 1937 to October 15 totalled 2,513,280. •It is announced that the Japanese puppet, Southern Hupeh, has deserted to the, Chinese with, 2000 men, carrying rifles and supplies.

The Chinese won an important victory in the foothills of the Yi Mountains in Shantung Province, says a communique. Over 5000 Japanese were killed or wounded. The main body of the Japanese, swollen to 40,000 men by the arrival of reinforcements, was forced to fall back four days ago, and the remnants have been surrounded.

The Japanese have sent another division to Burma, making a total of six, said an army spokesman at Chungking. The military situation in Manchukuo is unchanged. The Japanese are building a narrow gauge railway north from Paotow, in the Suiyuan Province.
